Chamberbitter

Chamberbitter is a warm-season broadleaf weed commonly found in lawns, landscapes, and ornamental beds. Known for its rapid spread and resilience, it has become increasingly problematic across the southern United States, particularly during hot, humid months.

How to Identify

Chamberbitter has small, oval-shaped leaves arranged alternately along slender stems, resembling a miniature mimosa or tamarind leaf. The most distinctive feature is its tiny round seed capsules that grow on the underside of the branches, making it easily identifiable when examined closely.

Lifecycle

This weed is a summer annual that germinates once soil temperatures reach warm levels in late spring. It grows quickly, producing seeds throughout summer and persisting until the first frost kills the plant.

Prevention & Control

Effective control begins before the weed produces seeds. Applying a pre-emergent herbicide in late spring can reduce germination. For established weeds, post-emergent broadleaf herbicides may be necessary. Maintaining dense, healthy turf helps shade the soil and prevent new seeds from sprouting.
